As many of you already know, Britta
was taken into custody on March 18, 2009 in
Florida and is currently awaiting trial.
She is detained in an immigration center
and has made the decision to stay and
fight. This is a long process, which means
she could be detained for months.
Her partner of 11 years, Carla is doing
everything she can to make sure that Britta
has a fair trial. She has hired an
immigration lawyer in Florida who has a
great track record in these cases. The sad
truth is, that if Carla and Britta were
able to marry in the U.S., Britta would not
be locked up now and robbed of her
freedoms.
Brittaʼs detention has already taken a toll
on those she loves dearly. Carla has worked
tirelessly on this case, calling lawyers,
Congress members, Gay rights activists,
immigration rights organizations, and the
media.
Friends and family of Britta and Carla fear
they will never see Britta again because of
a law that refuses to acknowledge same sex
couples.
We need your help! Please make a donation
to help support Britta's Defense Fund.
Carla has been paying for all the legal
fees and the phone bills that are
outrageously expensive from the detention
center.
If you could donate any amount you wish to
ensure that Britta gets a fair trial so
that Carla and Britta can be reunited and
obtain the basic rights we all take for
granted.
Please see the information below to find
out more about the case and how you can
help. Thank you in advance for helping our
dear friends Britta and Carla.
Britta's Defense Fund
There are over 35,000
couples who have been ripped apart, and
their partners forced to leave the USA to
live in Europe or Canada. The Uniting
American Families Act (UAFA, H.R.1024, S.
424) is a U.S. bill to amend the
Immigration and Nationality Act to
eliminate discrimination in the immigration
laws by permitting permanent partners of
United States citizens and lawful permanent
residents to obtain lawful permanent
resident status in the same manner as
spouses of citizens and lawful permanent
residents.
